In 1941, after the completion of his apprenticeship, Wolfram was delighted to be accepted as a student in the wood-sculpting school in Oberammergau (Bavaria).
In the meantime, war had broken out and he only had a few months doing his coursework before he was drafted into the army.
He made full use of his last happy moments, learning as much as he could, with great success.

He enjoyed woodcarving, and his hikes into the mountains were to play an important role in his artistic development. He was delighted by the sacred - and the rural architecture - as well as by the particularly rich regional folk art.
As with everywhere else at this time, politics dominated his surroundings. But they were not a topic of conversation amongst his circle of friends.
